What Makes Zurich So Livable? Third Spaces!

view of people enjoying Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich in Switzerland

After spending around 4 months living in Zurich, there are many wonderful traits of the city that I’ve grown to love and appreciate. The drinkable, clean water fountains on almost every block, the efficient and punctual transportation systems, and the natural beauty all around.

As I reflect on my time here, I can say that one of my favorite aspects of Zurich is definitely the amount of public spaces and benches that are easily accessible to everyone. As someone who prefers to hang out in and around the city, having third spaces is something very important to my way of living. Zurich not only has cafes and public libraries, but also many outdoor third spaces that provide a great respite from the busy school/work day.

In the city center, there are tons of benches lining Lake Zurich, providing space for anyone to sit and enjoy the waterfront. Some of my favorite benches even have a lovely view of the Alps! Aside from the city center, there are also lots of parks or small green spaces around Zurich, which not only offer mental health benefits, but also add to the general culture of appreciation for nature.

On a warm sunny day, almost everyone is sitting outside eating lunch with friends while sitting on these benches, or reading a book on a towel in a park. As we’ve entered the summer months, I’ve really seen Zurich come alive and the love its people have for being outdoors. These wonderful green spaces play a huge role in fostering this appreciation.
