1. Background
This past year, I participated in two different study abroad programs: the first was DIS: Study Abroad in Scandinavia, and the second was at the University of New South Wales. During this year, I have had so many highs and lows. I traveled outside of the United States for the first time, made it to the southern hemisphere, checked countless items off my bucket list, and on top of that was able to participate in courses that have broadened my ability and understanding of my practice in design. I would not change a thing from my experience over the past two semesters, but I also wanted to share some of the more challenging aspects so as to provide tips for making the most out of being abroad.

2. Bureaucracy is Key
Half of the battle is fighting paperwork. It's like a huge steep hill that you can’t see over, but once you reach the top there’s a massive waterslide that goes on for miles. Meaning, you might get discouraged at first during the process of researching which program is right for you, or during the potentially arduous task of understanding how your visa works or how to apply for courses abroad. Following diligence in this first stage of paperwork signing, notetaking, researching, and contemplating, you will not regret the time that you put into getting where you're going.

3. The Joy of Routine
One thing that really helped me adjust to both of my home countries was creating solid routines to follow to create stability in an entirely new environment. In doing so, I got to learn more about the places around my city and understand the cultural differences of my new community. I also found that I felt more comfortable in these spaces after building a reliable routine because there’s confidence in repetition that breaks you out of that outsider mentality.

4. Mental and Physical Health
The last tip is that by prioritizing your health, you can really maximize your entire experience abroad. Outlets such as journaling, working out, and creating a network of friends abroad who supported me, allowed me to take the changes in stride and push myself to try new things and have new experiences.

5. Good luck!
My semesters abroad were entirely different beasts, one being an exchange program and one being a provider program, but these tips were ones that applied heavily to both experiences. Most of all though, I’ve learned that all the experiences that I cherish from this time would not have been possible without the challenges. I am really grateful to have been able to participate in these programs, and in doing so will be more apt to take on new adventures in the future.
