Hi guys!!! My name is Emily Huang, and I am a junior at The George Washington University. This semester, I am studying abroad at the University of Sydney in Australia, and I wanted to share a little bit about what life has been like here so far.
Studying at the University of Sydney has been a completely different academic experience from what I was used to in Washington, D.C. The classes here are much larger, often held in big lecture halls, and the teaching style emphasizes independence. Instead of frequent smaller assignments, a lot of the work is based on major projects and exams. At first, it was intimidating to adjust to this format, but I’ve grown to appreciate the responsibility it gives me to take charge of my own learning and to make the most of my time in and outside of class. It’s taught me how to be more disciplined, resourceful, and self-motivated as a student.

Outside the classroom, Sydney has been incredible. One of the most special parts of living here is the balance between the city and the natural world. I can spend the morning at the Beach, enjoying the ocean, and later that day find myself walking past the Sydney Opera House with friends as the sun sets. The culture here values work-life balance in a way that feels very different from what I am used to, and it has been refreshing to be in an environment where people make time to both work hard and enjoy life. It reminded me that part of success is also learning how to slow down, recharge, and take care of yourself.

Another highlight has been the people I’ve met. I’ve been able to connect with students from all over Australia as well as from around the world, and those friendships have been some of the most rewarding aspects of this experience. Whether we are grabbing coffee, studying together in the library, or exploring new parts of the city, these connections have made Sydney feel more like home and have broadened my perspective on what it means to live and learn in a global community.

When I think about what this semester has given me, it goes far beyond academics. Studying abroad has pushed me out of my comfort zone in every way—navigating a new education system, building new friendships, living in a completely different city—and that challenge has been exactly what I needed. It has helped me grow as a student and as a person, and I know I’ll bring these lessons back with me when I return to GW.
