The Pyrenees Mountains in Spain

The Pyrenees Mountains in Spain

This weekend, my roommates and I decided to retreat from the dreary rain of Pamplona's springtime in favor of a snowy getaway in the Pyrenees mountains. Our city had already begun its transition to spring, with delicate hues of pink and white blossoms adorning the quaint streets, reminiscent of Washington during Cherry Blossom season.

As our car winded back and forth through mountains and valleys, we waited in anticipation for the green mountains to turn white with snow. However, our excitement turned to mild concern as we approached our destination- we had yet to see the elusive snow-capped mountains we had expected.

Yet, within minutes of reaching the quaint town of Canfranc, we were transported into a winter wonderland, as if we fell through a magical wardrobe and found ourselves in the Fantasmic Narnia. As dusk fell, we set out to explore the sleepy town. Trudging through the snow, we gaped at the fading mountain range surrounding us, occasionally pausing to launch snowballs at one another or create snow angels in the street.

The next day, we set off for the slopes. Determined to ski all day, we left early to catch the first chair at 9 o'clock. However, as we ascended the mountain we reached a snowy impasse, trapping us alongside other ill-equipped vehicles littered along the road. Fortunately, thanks to the Spanish hospitality and a pair of Guardia Civil officers, we fit chains on our front tires and climbed the remaining 400ft to the top of the ski lodge.

Close to two hours later, we finally set out for the chair lift, rental skis in tow. The snow was blinding, and for a moment I was hardly able to make out where the mountain began and ended. At the top of the mountain, I welled up with tears at the expansiveness of the Pyrenees. The panoramic view fluctuated with the angle of the sun, revealing new secrets every hour.

Before living in Pamplona, I underestimated the diversity of the Northern Spanish landscape. With its expansive coasts, valleys, and mountains, day trips from Pamplona are both accessible and affordable. For those enamored with mother nature's mystique, Pamplona is one of the best places to spend your semester abroad.
