As my time at UCD comes to a close, I have been thinking a lot about the journey from my first day here to now. If I had to describe this experience in one word, it would be independence.
Studying abroad was probably one of the biggest steps I have ever taken by myself. I moved to a foreign country where I didn’t really know anyone and had to figure out everything from scratch. I’ll be honest it was difficult at times, and I definitely had my moments of struggle. But looking back, I am so grateful for the opportunity. I don’t regret it for a second, and I am so glad I pushed myself to do this.
In a way, being here felt a lot like freshman year all over again. Everything was new, from navigating the massive UCD campus to learning a completely different academic system to making friends. As the semester went on I got into a routine and felt comfortable here at UCD. I’m really proud of myself for how I handled the adjustment and for building a life here from the ground up.
One of the best parts of studying in Dublin was the chance to travel, whether that was exploring the beautiful country of Ireland or visiting other European countries. I came here not knowing where in Europe I wanted to travel. I just wanted to explore new places, but meeting people who also wanted to travel and go to places that I had never even crossed my mind was amazing. For example over a break I went to Iceland, one of the most mesmerizing places I have ever seen.
Outside of travel, I’ve loved exploring the local food culture everywhere I visited and around Dublin. It has been so much fun trying different meal styles and discovering local spots. I actually found a favorite bakery here that I’ve visited a few times, I am definitely stopping there before I come back to the U.S.
The weather has finally turned around, and it doesn't rain every single day anymore. Seeing the campus in full bloom with the sun has been the perfect way to end the semester. I’m leaving Dublin feeling a lot more confident and capable than when I arrived, and I’m so thankful I took this chance to grow.
