Learning how to travel affordably while studying abroad is an important skill to efficiently explore the culture and history of your host country. The easiest way to do this is through your city's public transportation pass!

In Paris, I needed to buy a month-long public transportation pass to get from my apartment to class. I soon realized that the included transit expanded way beyond Paris and into nearby cities and areas. After doing some research, I began to travel to locations outside of Paris, allowing me to better submerge myself in the rich history and culture of France. My favorite day trips included visiting the cherry blossoms at Parc de Sceaux and learning the deep history of Château de Vincennes. Beyond famous landmarks, the extensive transportation network provided easy access to towns that celebrate culinary specialities and traditions that contribute to France's culture.

I strongly recommend two key tips for students looking to cheaply travel within their host country:

  1. secure a public transportation pass for cheap travel, and
  2. actively explore the diverse and accessible destinations accessible using transit.

Not only is it cost-effective, but for students who are already investing in a pass for class, it essentially becomes free travel.

This tip is not limited to just Paris. Cities across Europe offer similar transportation passes, enabling budget-friendly adventures and immersive cultural experiences.
