The Power of Everyday Interactions in a New City

As I hit the midway mark of my time studying abroad in London, I reflect on the friends I have made, the places I have traveled, and the incredible food I have enjoyed. However, the one thing that I know I will miss the most about leaving London and returning to the U.S. is the people.

Throughout my almost three months of being here, I have yet to experience an unpleasant interaction with a local. The hospitality in London is unmatched, and everyone seems willing to help. I frequently found myself in meaningful conversations with Uber drivers, waitstaff, and even strangers on the sidewalk. Initially, I held the preconceived notion that once a local heard my American accent, they would lose interest in talking to me or helping me. I quickly dismissed that misconception and learned that people are genuinely curious about where you are from and why you are abroad.

Growing up in New York City, I always dismissed the stereotype that New Yorkers were unfriendly because I simply refused to believe that a whole population was unkind. It’s not that New Yorkers are rude, they just don’t care about where you are from and why you are here. Maybe that’s why I find people in London so kind; they are willing to engage with me, something I am not used to back home. I don’t feel rushed when taking an extra second to reevaluate my salad order while standing in line, I’m not being pushed when trying to get onto the Tube during rush hour, and I haven’t been honked at—even though I never seem to know which way to look when crossing the street.

It is safe to say that the kindness I've been shown by the people of London has positively contributed to my study-abroad experience, and I know I will need to lower my expectations once I step on the plane back to the States.
