I’ve always heard people say that studying abroad is a life-changing experience, where you grow as a person in ways you never expected. Being caught up in the excitement and preparation, the reality didn’t truly hit me until I was sitting in my new dorm room at QMUL for the semester. My first day in London, I remember feeling so overwhelmed by the fact that I was really here. I had assumed studying abroad would feel just like going to college, but it quickly became clear that it’s a completely different experience. The moment it sunk in that my support system was an ocean away, I felt both exhilarated and a little out of my depth.

My first week in London, I was in full tourist mode, trying to check off as many iconic sights as I could before classes began. Tower Bridge, the National Gallery, Regent’s Park— I forgot I was going to be here for the whole semester! The realization finally settled in—I wasn’t just visiting London, I was living here. The excitement really set in and I started to embrace the city and all it had to offer. By my second week, my mindset had completely shifted. I was no longer doubting if I had made the right decision, I was fully embracing each day. I had experiences I’ll never forget, like watching deer run through Richmond Park, seeing Mamma Mia in the West End, and getting caught in a downpour in Bath.

Now, a month into studying abroad, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I’m still checking out the big tourist spots, but I’m also starting to experience London more like a local. There’s so much to do here that even after a month, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. Every corner of the city has something unique to offer. Apart from visiting London, I’ve also been able to travel to nearby countries, such as Vienna, with many more trips planned. But one thing I’ve learned is the importance of finding a balance. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of traveling to as many places as possible while studying abroad, but don’t forget to appreciate your host country. London itself has so much to offer, and I still have so much to explore! If you’re thinking about studying abroad, my advice is simple: go for it. Push through any fears or doubts, and embrace the unknown. The experience is worth it in every way.
