As my time in Milan comes to an end, I would like to share how study abroad impacted me and reflect on two words that are representative of my experience. I can definitely say that the Maria before abroad is different from the Maria after abroad. If I were to summarize my experience in 2 words, it would be: growth and grateful.
At first, going abroad can be a lot to take in. From one day to another you are experiencing many changes at once, which can be overwhelming. But how you react to these changes is what will make your experience a life changing one. When I arrived in Milan, I didn’t know what to expect, I had so many questions going through my mind: How will I communicate? How will I commute to school? How should I meet new people? So many worries, but eventually everything falls into its place. I learned to always try to initiate conversations in Italian, that walking to school was my preferred method of commute, and to always talk to the person sitting next to you in class because you never know if that person will be your new best friend. These moments when you are outside of your comfort zone are the moments where you grow the most.
When I look back at all the amazing memories and traveling experiences I had I cannot believe that everything has come to an end. It went by in the blink of an eye. Being abroad taught me to live life to the fullest, to go on every trip you have the chance too and appreciate every opportunity life gives you because it all comes to an end sooner than you know it. I will forever be extremely grateful to have been able to have had this opportunity.
I can now call Milan my home away from home and I will never forget all the amazing experiences I had.
