My name is Alura Winfrey. I am a junior currently studying abroad in Singapore at the National University of Singapore as a part of the Global Bachelor’s Program.

So far, my time in Singapore has been beyond my imagination. Before I came to Singapore, I had high expectations for the sort of experiences I would have, but so far my experiences have passed my expectations. Singapore has been everything that I could hope for in a study-abroad location. It is rich in culture, language, food, and place. There is something to do for those who are interested in culture, religion, and art as well as those who are looking to shop, go out into nature or become food connoisseurs. Singapore has a little bit of something for everyone.

What I love most, academically, are the classes I’m taking focused on the Southeast and South Asia regions as well as focusing specifically on the ethnic Chinese Singaporean community. These classes reinforce what I am learning through my day-to-day interactions within the city as I am constantly surrounded by Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian influences.

Within Singapore, my favorite places to visit have been Chinatown, Little India, Haji Lane, the Botanical Gardens, and the endless amounts of shopping malls. Chinatown and Little India provide great areas for site seeing (temples) as well as hawker centers for cheap and traditional/local cuisine. Haji Lane is very picturesque with an awesome nail salon, cafes, and boutiques. Lastly, the Botanical Gardens is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and really get some greenery.

If you’re ever in Singapore make sure to try the following dishes and drinks: chicken rice, kaya toast, anything Indian, Bandung drink, and Milo!
