Oftentimes when we think about the United Kingdom, our minds go straight to London. This makes sense, as London is an international hub with centuries of rich history, loads of enchanting neighborhoods, and a plethora of sights and landmarks that never cease to amaze. From Stratford to Notting Hill to Kensington, you will never be bored whilst in London. London is such an important and beautiful city, but you might also enjoy traveling to different parts of England outside of London during your time abroad. Each city in the United Kingdom has its own charm, history, and interest points. I would absolutely recommend visiting cities outside of London, as there is so much to learn and see in this country.
Transportation across the UK is convenient, reliable, and affordable, plus there are so many destinations to visit. Costs range from £15-£45 and trains go all the way south to the coastal town of Brighton, all the way north to Edinburgh in Scotland, east to Canterbury, and west to Bristol; just to name a few. The high-speed trains are comfortable and you will be able to take in scenic views on your journey. The easy booking process can be done online. The main places to book are either directly on the rail company website, or using TrainLine for discounted prices. The trains leave out of different stations depending on destinations and you can be in a different city in under half an hour!
In terms of places to visit, the options are endless. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Brighton, a beach city which is home to the beautiful Royal Pavillion Garden, the fun Brighton Pier, a quaint downtown filled with local food-spots and lots of thrift shops. Another option is Bath, a stunning town that will make you feel like you are the main character in a Jane Austen novel. My favorite of the cities I have visited would have to be Oxford. This historic hub of academics with among the best libraries and architecture I have ever seen. Wandering around the many college campuses and many gardens will blow you away. The list of potential destinations for a day trip, or even a weekend getaway are endless. There are so many things I have been able to explore, many people I have been able to meet, and so many unforgettable memories I have created while studying abroad in London and I am so excited for what is to come on the rest of my study abroad journey.
