As I enter my fourth week in London, I have had the privilege of immersing myself in the city through its iconic Tube system. While I am accustomed to using public transportation in Washington, D.C., I have found the experience in London to be quite different. The Tube offers not only an efficient and affordable means of navigating the city, but it also provides a fascinating opportunity for people-watching, allowing me to observe and reflect on the diversity and vibrancy of life in London. Each journey reveals new layers of the city’s culture and offers me the chance to discover different neighborhoods and landmarks, enriching my overall experience abroad. Unlike some cities that center around a single “downtown” area, London’s many neighborhoods each have their own distinct character, atmosphere, and attractions. I feel confident that I will never run out of new places to explore, and this diversity has added a rich layer to my time here.
Academically, one of the most striking differences I have noticed is the seminar culture here in London. Although I have participated in seminars at GW, the approach at King’s College has been notably different. The absence of direct grading tied to seminar participation has fostered an environment where students feel more at ease expressing their thoughts and opinions. This has led to more open, dynamic discussions that extend beyond the classroom. The informal, yet intellectually stimulating nature of these seminars has allowed me to engage more deeply with the material and to appreciate the value of diverse perspectives. These conversations often linger with me, prompting further reflection on the topics discussed and enhancing my overall academic experience.
From exploring the dynamic streets of London to engaging in thought-provoking discussions at King’s College London, I am gaining valuable experiences that will undoubtedly shape my perspective moving forward!
