Studying abroad at Kyoto University gave me the chance to reconnect with a culture and language that have always been a part of my life. Taking Japanese language courses and using the language daily helped me grow more confident and connect with the community around me. At first, it was a little intimidating to study in a country where English is not the main language spoken, but making the effort to communicate in Japanese quickly drew me into the experience. Through daily interactions and cultural exchange, I deepened my connection to Japanese culture in ways I had never experienced before.

One of the most rewarding parts of my time in Kyoto was joining student circles and putting myself out there. I became a member of the university’s origami and sightseeing circles, and through them, I made some of my closest friends. The origami circle reintroduced me to an activity I loved when I was younger, bringing back a sense of calm and creativity. Meanwhile, the sightseeing circle gave me the chance to explore places I might never have discovered on my own—local festivals, hidden corners of the city, and community events. These experiences allowed me to practice Japanese in authentic settings and learn about the culture beyond the classroom. Saying yes to these opportunities not only improved my language skills but also helped me feel truly part of student life at Kyoto University.
Outside of campus life, I immersed myself in the city’s rich history and traditions. Exploring iconic sites like Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera gave me a deeper appreciation for Kyoto’s serene beauty. Food also played a starring role in my experience—whether it was savoring matcha parfaits, indulging in fresh sushi, or enjoying steaming bowls of udon.
Looking back, my time in Kyoto was not just an academic experience but a personal journey of growth. It was a season of rediscovery, connection, and confidence—one that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
