In my time abroad thus far, it seems that every skill and responsibility that I've learned in my time at GWU has been expected of me twice as much as they ever have before. Between money management, public transport navigation, communication, and so much more, going off to a new country certainly demands your very best in what feels like everything. This truth might sound scary, but if you seek to grow into someone independent and self-sufficient, studying abroad will certainly give you endless opportunities to hone your “adulting” skillset.
The best part of this challenge is that it grants you a wider range of opportunities and experiences. As I look back on this semester so far, having strong confidence in my abilities has enabled me to explore castles in Hamburg, walk on beaches in Sicily, and barter in the streets of Morocco. I’m grateful to have this opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and undergo new exploits as far as confidence in my abilities (and my wallet) can take me.
So, for those who are called by the thrill of personal growth, this is definitely the path for you. Take that leap and see how much you’ll flourish after studying abroad.
