I Never Danced… Until I Studied Abroad in Buenos Aires

Approaching the end of my study abroad experience in Buenos Aires, I am reminded of how quickly time flies and reflect on how much I’ve grown since August. My time as a bilingual student and resident Yankee in my classes at Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT) has helped me more clearly understand as well as to mature as I approach the end of my undergraduate years.

Perhaps most glaring is how much I miss my friends and family, especially after getting sick while abroad, despite all the new colleagues I’ve made through classes and through random encounters outside of class, like tango! Because although we have all travelled across South America together and provided support to one another, it simply doesn’t compare to being back home with those with whom you’ve shared years of fraternity and love.

Likewise, the challenges of taking classes and exams in another language are daunting, but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel has allowed me to see how much I’d recommend it to those looking to improve their language skills in spite of the inevitable frustration. As nothing compares to the level of change you’ll experience through the baptism of fire that is night after night of readings in a foreign language.

Lastly, I’d like to highlight the skills and hobbies I’ve collected through my time as a student abroad: I learned countless lessons in independent living and self-reliance, I’ve deepened my cultural and linguistic understanding of local accents and perspectives, and I’ve begun taking weekly classes in both salsa and tango! I remember calling my friends back in the US and the notable surprise in their voices when I mentioned that last part, because “You don’t dance!?” But being abroad opens many doors that might never have otherwise been possible. Perhaps obscured by a social or personal inhibition that now seems utterly shattered through this wonderful, unique experience abroad.
