Produce at a street market in Sydney

Produce at a street market in Sydney

Saturdays in Sydney are not like every other day. They’re market days. These aren’t just farmers’ markets or the occasional pop-up market like we might have in DC; these are massive weekly events featuring an amazing variety of goods. For this blog post, I thought I would share a guide to my favorites. If you’re ever in Sydney, they’re definitely worth checking out!

1. Manly Markets

My favorite markets are those at Manly. Simply take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, and it won’t be hard to find. This market stretches out over a long block in Manly and has so much to offer. Though it does not have food like other markets do, the vendors here have amazing one-of-a-kind goods. You can find handmade glass jewelry, artwork, small clothing shops, and more. Since it’s slightly harder to get to than other markets in Sydney, I have found that the Manly Markets are less crowded, making it a really nice experience. After you’ve walked through the market, I’d recommend going to Shelly Beach, just a 15 minute walk away. It’s beautiful, and always worth the trip.

2. Glebe Markets

These markets are some of the most popular for a reason. They’re huge, taking up a lot of space in Glebe. There, you can find nearly anything you want. From dumplings to crystals to vintage T-shirts, the Glebe Markets have something for everyone. Every time I go, I find something new that I want. I would especially recommend these markets if you’re into thrifting. They have so many vintage clothing vendors. My friend even saw an old GW shirt there once! This market never disappoints. Just make sure to give yourself enough time there! You could spend a long time there and still have more to see.

3. Paddington Markets

These markets are held in Paddington, one of my favorite neighborhoods, and like the Glebe Markets are very popular. Here, you can find soap, fresh flowers, fun socks, and more. However, what really sets this market apart is its produce. A good section of the market is devoted to vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables. Every time I go, I have to stop myself from buying more than I need. If you find yourself studying abroad in Sydney, I would recommend factoring this market into your grocery budget.

While these are only a few of my favorite markets, Sydney has no shortage of others. There’s truly something for everyone! When I go home, I know that I’ll find myself wishing I could go to these markets on Saturdays.
