Hong Kong, similar to any metropolis, offers many different cuisines and restaurants. Some of the most popular cuisines in Hong Kong include Vietnamese, Korean, and Italian. But in particular, Hong Kong is famous for its Cantonese cuisine which is offered in many different Hong Kong-style cafes around the city.
Hong Kong-style cafes offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a variety of Hong Kong-style drinks and desserts. These cafes are more affordable than restaurants and their menus change every day. The Cafe de Coral chain is one example of a Hong Kong-style cafe that is found all over Hong Kong, including next to the University of Hong Kong campus. There are also more local Hong Kong cafes, which are generally family-run businesses. They can be found in both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon!
Pineapple buns and egg tarts are popular HK desserts and they are served by most Hong Kong-style cafes and bakeries. Milk tea and lemon tea are staple Hong Kong drinks that go well with any meal! My go-to order is BBQ-style pork with rice along with milk tea and a sweet bun for dessert!
Other popular Cantonese dishes include steamed fish, char siu, and shrimp dumplings.
Hong Kong also offers a variety of fruits which can be hard to come by in the US. Hong Kong grocery stores and markets sell purple dragon fruit, passion fruit, durian, and Asian pears.
Meals on average cost 60 HKD which is about $8!
Overall, food in Hong Kong is very affordable and there are many options to choose from. The University of Hong Kong canteens also offer a generous variety of foods for students.
