Studying abroad at Waseda University has already been one of the most exciting parts of my college experience. Even though I have only been here for the first couple of weeks, I have already learned a lot. I chose Japan because it was the part of the world I was most interested in, especially because of the landscape, the city life, and the culture.
Before getting to Japan, I was nervous about everything and how it would go. I worried about the language barrier, not knowing anyone, making friends, and just adjusting. So far, I think adjusting has been the hardest part, especially doing things alone at first. At the same time, that challenge helped me grow and become more comfortable with stepping outside of my comfort zone.
One of the biggest surprises for me has been how organized Japan is. Tokyo is such a busy and exciting city, but it also feels very ordered. So far, the best part of my experience has been exploring Tokyo and seeing so many different places. I have visited the Imperial Palace and spent time in Ginza, and it's nice to see both the historical and modern sides of the city.
Academically, Waseda has also been different from what I expected. Classes are usually one hour and forty minutes, and some can be almost three hours long. That was surprising to me. I would say the classes are moderate in difficulty, although it really depends on the course. Being here has reminded me that studying abroad is not only about exploring a new country, but also about adjusting to a new academic environment.
Another thing I have really enjoyed is meeting people from so many different parts of the world. Once school starts, you realize how many students have come to Japan from different places and backgrounds, and that has been one of the most exciting parts of the experience so far.
Even though I am still at the beginning of my time at Waseda, I already know this experience is helping me grow. Studying abroad can feel overwhelming at first and things may not go as expected, but it is also incredibly rewarding. I am excited to see how I spend my time here.
