Studying abroad is an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. From packing just the “right” clothing to choosing your courses, there are lots of decisions that need to be made. In the chaos of preparing and packing, sometimes, special items can be left behind and chosen not to be packed.
These items are the things you see everyday in your room and that make your space a home. Perhaps it’s a birthday card from your best friend, your favorite band poster, or a physical photo of your family. And though they may not seem like it, when you’re packing for your semester abroad, these items are incredibly necessary and important.
The first time I studied abroad, I didn’t quite understand this. My room lacked personality, was completely bare, and only consisted of a book or two as “decoration.” I didn’t realize how much this would affect me until I was already in the midst of my classes. Instead of coming home to a room that felt like a safe and inviting environment, I was surrounded by 4 blank walls. Especially being so far away, a small memento from home would’ve made all the difference.
Now, as I study abroad again, I was sure to bring along a few physical photos and a small decorative banner. Though it may not seem like a lot, these compact items that took up little space in my luggage have allowed me to feel at home, even abroad. Stuck on what to bring along? Here are just a few items that don’t take up much room and that will allow you to brighten up your space:
- A small stack of your favorite polaroids
- A card from a loved one
- A poster
- A decorative banner or wall hanging
- Your comfort book
- A trinket bowl
- Decorative mini string lights (bonus points they’re battery-operated)
- Stickers
- A framed photograph
So, as you’re packing for your next semester abroad, think twice about those seemingly unimportant items that adorn your living space. Bringing some of these along can make a big difference, providing you a little bit of happiness and comfort on a daily basis.
