Traveling while studying abroad can be expensive, but there are ways to cut costs. Here are some of my basic tips to save money while exploring new places:
- Flights
- Use flight comparison tools like Google Flights or Expedia to find the cheapest options. Booking flights during less popular times can sometimes result in lower prices. Personally, I have flown very late in the night multiple times to save money.
- Accommodation
- Hostels are a common budget option, with sites like Hostelworld offering a range of choices. However, I always check the price of Hotels too as many times it has actually been cheaper for me to stay at a Hotel than a Hostel.
- Food
- Eating out can add up quickly. Local street food can be a cheaper option and almost every city has a marketplace that is great to go with friends as there are a lot of different food options to pick from.
- Transportation
- Public transportation is generally the most affordable way to get around in most cities. Furthermore, Walking is my favorite type of transportation as it is free and allows you to explore more.
- Tours
- Free walking tours are available in many cities, and they can provide insight into local history and culture. Most Hostels offer cheap walking tours on a daily basis.
- Souvenirs
- Souvenirs can be very expensive. Photos and memories can be more much meaningful and cost nothing.
Traveling on a budget requires careful early planning and prioritizing. These tips can help make trips while studying abroad more affordable while still allowing you to enjoy the experience.
