Beyond the Classroom: 3 Ways to Make Your Study Abroad Experience Unforgettable

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting and transformative experiences you can have. It’s a time to explore new cultures, meet people from around the world, and learn outside the classroom. To help you make the most of your time abroad, here are some of my personal recommendations to make your experience unforgettable.

1. Meet friends outside of your study abroad cohort: The first few weeks abroad can feel overwhelming and mentally exhausting, and it’s easy to stick with people you know. However, stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to some of the best friendships. By participating in every event with my orientation group, I met friends from all over the world. These friendships have become some of my closest, and I am so thankful that I took the initiative to make these connections.

2. Book that cheap flight to a lesser-known location: While visiting popular tourist destinations is tempting, some of the best trips I have taken have been to places that I had never heard of before. Malta, for example, was an unexpected and unanticipated gem. It was rich with history, culture, and opportunities to explore. Venturing to less mainstream locations often offers a more authentic, immersive experience that is important to seek out during study abroad. Do some research, book that cheap flight, and prepare for a journey that will surprise you.

3. Money and sleep return, memories do not: At risk of sounding cliché, do not be afraid to invest in experiences during your semester abroad. Of course, managing your budget and health is very important, but make sure that you budget in time and resources to explore and have fun. When else will you be in your twenties, traveling the world? (This has been my motto this semester). One of my most expensive trips was to Morocco, and although it felt like a big splurge at the time, it turned out to be one of the most transformative experiences of my life. This is your time to live fully---so make the memories, even if it means stretching your budget a bit.

Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so embrace every moment. Be curious, be safe, and be open to the incredible adventures and friendships that lie ahead.
