As part of the GW Chile program in Santiago, I had the privilege of interning with Fundación Iguales, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote full inclusion of sexual diversity in Chilean society through policy advocacy, education, training, and collaboration, aiming for a country where diversity is valued, and all individuals live freely, safely, and equally, eradicating discrimination and embracing human rights.

Looking back, I can confidently say that this experience became one of the most memorable highlights of my entire study abroad adventure. As a Project Coordinator at Fundación Iguales, I had the opportunity to be part of various impactful activities. I conducted research on Comprehensive Sexual Education and advocated for inclusivity for transgender individuals in the Chilean workforce. These projects have since become valuable resources for Iguales, empowering them to hold informative talks and develop important initiatives. Additionally, I worked on a project proposal to create a network of lawyers supporting LGBT+ individuals seeking legal assistance, which we successfully submitted to the United States Embassy. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my internship was the chance to participate in talks on LGBT+ themes at universities, engage with a professional women's soccer team, connect with local communities, and even have an enriching conversation with the ambassador to Ireland in Chile.

Yet, beyond the impactful projects, it was the incredible support and care I received from my coworkers at Fundación Iguales that truly stood out. From day one, I was warmly welcomed and treated as a valued member of the organization. They became like a second family to me during my stay in Chile, offering guidance in improving my Spanish, helping me adjust to the new culture, and celebrating both personal and professional milestones with me.

Working at Fundación Iguales went beyond being just an internship; it was a life-changing experience. I gained profound insights into gender diversity issues in Chile and the critical importance of advocating for the LGBT+ community and other minority groups. This journey not only helped me grow professionally but also shaped my perspectives on advocacy and the power of community engagement.

My time at Fundación Iguales was truly transformative. It allowed me to contribute to a cause I deeply care about and forge meaningful connections with inspiring individuals. The opportunity to participate in talks, collaborate with a women's soccer team, and engage with local communities added incredible value to my experience. I am immensely grateful for the personal and professional growth I gained during my time there. To anyone considering a study abroad program, I wholeheartedly recommend embracing such opportunities, as they can lead to life-changing experiences that shape your future positively. Fundación Iguales will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am excited to witness the continued impact they make in promoting diversity and inclusivity in Chile and beyond.
