Health Insurance

Exchange Students entering GW are required to have health insurance coverage that will be in effect during their time abroad. To ensure that students have adequate coverage while at GW, all admitted exchange students will be automatically enrolled in the GW Student Health Insurance Plan offered through Aetna.

If students already carry health insurance that meets GW’s required minimum standards and wish to waive GW health insurance coverage, they must provide proof of their health insurance coverage upon enrolling at the university and waive the GW Student Health Insurance coverage by the university’s designated deadline for the semester or semesters of study. Information on how to waive this coverage will be provided to students after they are admitted to GW.

GW also strongly recommends that exchange students secure dental insurance coverage, which is not included in the universitys Student Health Insurance Plan. Dental insurance coverage may be purchased through Aetna or through another provider of the students choosing.

All admitted exchange students are subject to the District of Columbia  immunization requirement.

All students younger than 26 years of age must provide proof of the following vaccinations:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (two vaccinations with the initial dose given after the first birthday, or positive titers)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox - by vaccination, documented history of the disease or positive titers)
  • Current Tetanus/Diphtheria booster (within 10 years prior to the beginning of your first semester at GWU)
  • One Polio vaccine
  • Three Hepatitis B vaccinations
  • One Meningococcal vaccination -OR- submit a Meningococcal Waiver

Admitted students will be given guidance on how to complete the immunization requirement at GW.
