GW Chile Banner

The GW Chile program allows students multiple venues to build a course schedule that best complements their academic interests. Students may

  • directly enroll in courses at Universidad de Chile
  • directly enroll in courses at Pontificia Universidad Católica
  • enroll in GW courses

Students must take at least one course from each host university and usually enroll in four total courses for the semester. Students who have not yet taken SPAN 2006 will be required to take this course while in Chile.

During the on-site orientation in Santiago, students receive detailed information about the local academic culture, course registration instructions, and tips for academic success. Students receive the university course catalogs and access to the GW Chile database of course information which includes course evaluations completed by all former program students.

U ChileStudents have individual academic advising meetings with the GW Chile Resident Director (RD), where they receive help selecting appropriate classes. Once the semester starts, students have an add/drop period of three weeks to visit as many courses as they’d like before they register. A strong emphasis is placed on independent learning in Chile, so students need to be organized and highly motivated. Students find the exposure to a different academic system to be enriching and have also commented that it's interesting to gain a South American perspective on world politics and history through their coursework in Chile.

For many students, the GW Chile course on Historical Memory and Human Rights in Chile has sparked a new interest in the topic of human rights and in the history of their own country, as they explore the U.S.’s involvement in the Chilean military coup.
