About University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1583, is an internationally renowned center for teaching and research in Edinburgh. The University is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city, with many of the iconic buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the University. It was the fourth university to be established in Scotland and is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in Europe, having been consistently placed amongst the leading 25 universities in the world. With over 28,000 students from over 130 countries, GW students have the opportunity to interact with a diverse student body.

George Washington students can select from over 500 courses in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering. Courses at Edinburgh are worth 5 U.S. credits each, so GW students take 3 courses per semester. Below is a sampling of the departments available in both colleges:

Life at Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and the seat of the Scottish Parliament, so GW students will feel right at home in this capital city. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site, the city is rich in history and culture. The city is also home to many festivals, including the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival held each August. At the University, students have the opportunity to get involved in hundreds of student societies ranging from common interest groups, political groups, and sports leagues. The Edinburgh University Students' Association also runs several student buildings throughout campus that include restaurants, pubs, performance space, and game rooms. Accommodations

George Washington students are guaranteed on campus accommodations. Students can choose to live in catered residences (dorms with meal plans), self-catered residences (dorms without meal plans), or self-catered flats (apartments). Exchange students typically have their own bedrooms and live with other international and local students.

GW students will apply for their accommodation upon acceptance to Edinburgh. They will pay all housing fees directly to Edinburgh. Learn more about the various accommodation options at Edinburgh here.

If you study abroad with the University of Edinburgh for the Fall Semester, you are eligible to receive an automatic $1500 tuition award if you join the Focus on Fall Abroad Community!

How to Apply:

In order to start an application for a GW Exchange program, you must first meet with the appropriate study abroad advisor. Click the "Apply Now" button above to start an advising application. You will be prompted to login with your GW netID (the part of your GW email address before the "@" symbol) and password. Once you have completed the Pre-Advising Appointment Worksheet listed on the right-hand side of the screen, click on the Staff link to make an appointment with the appropriate advisor identified at the top of this page.

Once you have met with your regional study abroad advisor, they will give you access to the Exchange application. Please be sure to schedule your appointment well in advance of the application deadline stated above as all Exchange applications require recommendations, personal statements, transcripts, etc. If you have any questions about how the online appointment scheduler works, please call our office at 202.994.1649.
